Easy Guide to Renewing Your US Visa

To live legally and peacefully in the United States, keeping your Visa valid is extremely important. Currently, the US government allows Visa renewal online without requiring another interview, helping applicants save time and effort. So what conditions are needed for this process and how do you prepare the documents? Let’s explore with Newland USA in the article below.

1. Conditions for Visa Renewal

To be considered for online Visa renewal, you need to meet some basic criteria:

  • Vietnamese citizen: The applicant must have Vietnamese citizenship or legal residency in Vietnam and be currently present in the country.
  • Not using passport for 2 weeks: During the application review period, you cannot request to withdraw your passport.
  • Same type of Visa: The renewal Visa must be the same type as the previously issued Visa.
  • Original Visa in good condition: Ensure your current Visa is not cancelled, lost, or revoked.
  • Age requirement: Your previous Visa must have been issued when you were 14 years or older and you had all 10 fingerprints taken.
  • Matching passport and Visa information: Ensure the information on both documents matches, including name, date of birth, place of birth, and nationality.
  • DS-160 form: All questions in the Security and Background section must be answered “No”.

Additionally, for specific Visa types such as study abroad, work, or exchange programs, you need to prepare additional documents as required.

2. Online Visa Renewal Process

The current online Visa renewal process is divided into 7 clear steps, making it easy for you to follow and complete:

  1. Fill out the DS-160 form online:
First, you need to fill in information on a new DS-160 form. Note that previously used old forms are not accepted.
  2. Log in to your application account:
Access the UStraveldocs website to log in and check the conditions needed for online Visa renewal. The system will ask you to answer some questions to determine your application’s eligibility.
  3. Pay the fee:
After confirming eligibility, you’ll be required to pay the fee. US Visa renewal fees vary depending on the Visa type, ranging from $185 to $315, plus additional costs related to delivery services.
  4. Print the interview waiver confirmation letter:
Next, you need to print the interview waiver confirmation letter from the system. This letter includes a barcode, your name, and passport number, and is an important document when submitting your application.
  5. Prepare and submit documents:
Prepare all necessary documents such as passport, 5x5cm white background photo, copy of birth certificate or citizen identification, payment receipt, along with the new DS-160 form. Then, bring all documents to the delivery post office and follow the staff’s instructions. Note: do not staple documents together.
  6. Application processing:
The post office will transfer your documents to the US Embassy or Consulate for processing. Typically, the online Visa renewal review process takes about 2 working weeks, but may be faster in some cases.
  7. Receive results:
After your application is reviewed, the post office will return your passport and accompanying documents with the new Visa if approved.

With detailed step-by-step instructions, the online US Visa renewal process becomes simple and convenient, helping you save a lot of time and effort.
